Cruising Through the Canals

For our July event, we will meet at the Sanibel Boat Ramp. From the put-in, it’s a quick paddle east to the Sanibel canals. Once in the canals, we can loop around, check out the various wading birds, observe mangrove crabs as they scuttle to and fro, and enjoy looking at Sanibel from a new perspective. The paddle will be held on Tuesday, July 17th from 10:30 am to noon.

May 22nd Bowman’s Beach Mangrove Exploration

We called the May 13th meet up when strong rains and thunderstorms rolled in on Sunday afternoon. However, we don’t want to miss our opportunity to explore the waters around Bowman’s Beach. So, we are rescheduling our May meet-up for Tuesday, May 22nd, from 2:00 – 3:00 PM. We will paddle through the bayous, encounter wading and diving birds, and discover a bit about mangrove ecosystems. For the more adventurous folks, there’s also an opportunity to portage over Old Blind Pass, and into the Gulf!

Bowman’s Beach Mangrove Exploration

Sanibel Sea School's Ocean Tribe Paddling Club organizes a meet-up each month for paddling enthusiasts to enjoy a group paddle, share tips and ideas, and meet new friends to paddle with.

Weather permitting, the May meet-up will be held on Sunday, May 13th, from 2:00 – 3:00 PM. We will paddle through the bayous, encounter wading and diving birds, and discover a bit about mangrove ecosystems. Those interested in joining the paddle should bring their own paddling equipment (kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards and other paddle-powered vessels are all welcome). A limited number of loaner boards are available, but must be reserved via email in advance. The group will meet at the Bowman’s Beach canoe/kayak launch. It's hard to miss our orange SUP Trailer! Parking is $5 per hour.

Afternoon Paddle

One of the first thunderstorms of the year rolled in to meet us right before our scheduled paddle earlier this month. Needless to say, the gusty winds and sheeting rain prohibited that meetup from happening. So, on Sunday, April 29th, at 2:00 p.m., we’re going to try this paddle again, and hopefully beat the weather!

Join us for a paddle on San Carlos Bay. We’ll meet on the west side of Sanibel Causeway Island A. Bring your favorite paddling equipment - kayaks, canoes, SUPs, etc. are all welcome. We'll go for a relaxed group paddle, share tips and ideas, and meet new friends to paddle with.

A limited number of loaner boards are available, but must be reserved via email in advance. Parking is free. Questions? Email oceantribepaddlers@sanibelseaschool.org.

Your first Ocean Tribe Paddlers event is free. After that, we ask that you purchase a club membership via our website at oceantribepaddlers.org.

On the day of the event, please check the Ocean Tribe Paddlers Facebook page for all weather related updates. We hope to see you on the water!

The Great American Cleanup

Join Coastal Keepers and the Ocean Tribe Paddlers on Saturday, April 21st for The Great American Cleanup, an initiative created by Keep America Beautiful. This is a paddle-based cleanup, so we will travel through Sanibel’s east end canals via paddlecraft, gathering litter along the way. If you do not have a paddlecraft, Ocean Tribe Paddlers has a limited number of loaner paddleboards and kayaks available.

We will meet at Sanibel Sea School’s Flagship Campus at 8 AM for a briefing, then divide into small groups before driving to the Sanibel Boat Ramp to launch our vessels. Parking is available there for a small fee. All cleanup materials will be provided. After the event, participants are invited to return to Sanibel Sea School for refreshments. To register for The Great American Cleanup, please go to http://klcb.org/great-american-cleanup.html and choose Sanibel Canals as your location. We kindly ask that you register online in advance to help our friends at Keep Lee County Beautiful measure participation. To reserve a paddleboard or kayak, please contact oceantribepaddlers@sanibelseaschool.org before the event.
